Cousin Birthdays
On Sunday, the 17th, we drove down to Richmond for cousin S's baptism. I failed to get any decent pictures of the kids all together, or cousin S with his parents and grandparents. After the baptism we all went back to S's house for birthday cake, which was for both cousin S and his sister cousin G since they share a birthday, a year apart.

Headbands
PS is really into headbands lately. Buddy even bought her a few more from Claire's for her Christmas present. Baby X finds them in her room and thinks of them as dress-up hats. Here he is sporting a hot pink sparkley one with a flower and a princess on the side.
Harry Potter closet
The crawl space under our stairs is used as extra storage, and has a tiny little half door off of our kitchen. We call it our Harry Potter closet. This closet is unfinished and old wood and totally creeps me out. I spend as little time in it and near it and with the door open as possible. The kids LOVE it. Anytime I drag a box out to look through something, they are all in the as fast as can be hanging out.
Nehemiah
For our Family Home Evening lesson on January 11, we learned about Nehemiah. Buddy was in charge of the activity, and B was sure he'd like this idea.... we constructed a wall around the temple out of Legos.

Bookshelves

B and I decided to use our Christmas and birthday money from my parents to buy bookshelves. On Tuesday we scoped them out at IKEA (LOVE that I live close to an IKEA now) and on Wednesday B drove back with the car seats out of the car so he could lay down the backseat and fit all the bookshelves in the car. They are black-brown, not black like they look in the picture. We figured that we are going to have an eclectic display of bookshelves, so we shouldn't try to make them match. He and Buddy became experts at assembling bookshelves while we were in Ohio. They built three sets of bookshelves for B's parents. (Buddy apparently built the third one on his own with some help.) So B assembled these and dragged the boxes down from PS's room and we unloaded books. We still have 5-6 boxes of books that are mainly kids books that are too old for PS still, or textbooks, etc. We have a bookshelf in our bedroom that is for our pocket paperback books that we got all organized. Plus the big one from the original picture that was a wedding present from my brother and his wife. And we have three smaller bookshelves full of kid books. And one smaller bookshelves full of B's school books and reference books, etc.

Princess Sparkley's New Room
In December we took apart the bunk beds Princess Sparkley and Buddy have been sharing since January 2007 and moved Baby X's crib into their old room with Buddy. Princess Sparkley moved into Baby X's room that also doubled as a storage area for the boxes of books, framed pictures, and outgrown baby clothes that we aren't using right now. The first few weeks in the room, half of the room was still boxes. We've spent the last week getting more organized, buying bookshelves and cleaning up. Here is the end result:
She got this canopy for Christmas.
Her desk in the background is still a mess.
She and Daddy worked something out so she could get this fancy lamp. He was going to get her a plain one for $9. She wanted this one for $18. So he paid half and she paid half and she got this cool lamp. It makes her room a little pink too.
Baby X loves to climb in her bed and hang out now. Mainly, I think he's thinking he's a big kid and should be freed from the crib. His mom isn't so sure.
We still need to get a shelf up in her room for her to put knick-knacks on. Basically if the surface is flat, within minutes she's got it covered in stuff to display. But it looks very messy and cluttered, so we're trying to come up with a good solution for that.
I also need to hunt down her bedskirt. We didn't use it when they were bunkbeds but now we have the bed up on risers from IKEA and shoved a bunch of boxes of books and framed pictures under her bed.

Introducing... the next Tiger Woods*
*only the good aspects of Tiger Woods, such as being a super famous, super rich, young golfer, not the crazy stuff that he's in the news for now.
Baby X has been carrying around baseball bats, Buddy's golf clubs, my old baton, basically, anything stick like, and hitting balls with it for awhile. This week, he seems to have mastered a frighteningly powerful swing.
We're excited about his interest in golf since it is a sport that his heart problems allow.

Haircut
B made me watch the dvd that came with our hair clippers today. I ran upstairs scared when they introduced "the mushroom" cut and explained that it was a cut that was great for both boys and girls. The end result, Buddy got a sort of decent, non-buzzed haircut. And Baby X just got a long buzz. I hated to buzz off all of his cute hair since it was so traumatic (for me) last time, so I tried to keep it long enough to put some gel in and comb to the side or spike. He did wonderfully, but wasn't going to sit still enough long enough for me to attempt a little boy, non-buzzed haircut.

The Drive Home
We left Ohio Sunday (January 10) morning around 11 AM.
Pictures taken from Interstate 68 in West Virginia out the car window. We were lucky, the drive was beautiful because all the trees were covered in snow, and none of the snow was on the road.
Brandonville, WV
Sunset as we were leaving Brandonville.
I got some better pictures of this sunset, but they are really blurry from the moving car and the dirty windows.
We saw a lot of deer on our drive... it turns out they are much easier to spot when the trees are bare and it's snowy.

Capitol of Ohio
The last time we drove through Columbus, Ohio and saw the Capitol, it was the middle of the night as we drove from Kansas to Pittsburgh for Great Grandma M's funeral. The picture, being taken in the dark, wasn't very good, so we took another on this trip.
COSI: Part 2
This bottom level had a huge water exhibit and a huge space exhibit (which I didn't take any pictures in), along with a cafe, theater, gift shop, etc.

This was a huge statue of Poseidon with squirting fish that the visitor's could control, etc.
We had a great time, and Grandma M bought a grandparent membership, so we'll be sure to visit again. The kids were disappointed that we did this on our last day in Ohio because they wanted to know about it so they could have done it again and again.

COSI: Part 1
B and I went to the Columbus Temple, and then Grandma and Grandpa M drove the kids to Columbus and we met them at COSI, the Center of Science and Industry. It's basically a science center or science museum. B's family went there several times when he was little, although it's since changed downtown locations.
The temperature was 18 degrees when we got out of the car.

Buddy and Grandma tested it out.
Then Princess Sparkley had a turn.
Then Princess Sparkley performed lazer eye surgery. This was a lot like that "game" you play at the eye doctors when you have to hit a trigger every time you see a red dot, except you had to line up your lazer with the centers of big, bad circles and fry their centers.
This first wing of the museum was all over Baby X's head. There was a part of this floor just for babies to kindergartners, but we didn't make it there.
This exhibit was called Progress. This part was old timey with brick roads and carriages.
The next section of Progress was the mid 1960s with diners and such.
An ice cream parlor.
Baby X checks out the mustard while PS and Buddy play diner.
Outside the "hardware shop" was this rocket ride for 10 cents (with a few dimes sitting there for use).
Baby X especially enjoyed this ride. And kept running back to it after we'd moved to other parts of the "city."
The kids really liked this internal combustion engine exhibit.

B rode this balancing unicycle across the second floor on a tight rope.
